Reflections on a Troubling Incident in Philippine Basketball

I recently read a news article about a Filipino basketball player involved in a shooting incident. This wasn’t the first time his name made headlines for negative reasons. If memory serves me right, he was also involved in an incident during a basketball game, where he went over to the opposing team’s bench and physically assaulted several players. Surprisingly, despite this violent behavior, he only received an indefinite suspension during his college days, while another player, whose violation was related to contract issues, was banned for life.

At the time, I couldn’t help but notice the disparity in the sanctions. One player was severely punished for violating contract rules, while the other, involved in physical violence, received a much lighter penalty. This player, now involved in the shooting, has always been known for his physicality and short temper. In my opinion, he can even be considered a “dirty player.”

When I read about the shooting, I wasn’t shocked that he was involved. What surprised me more was the fact that he had been allowed to play in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Players like him should not be given the privilege to play in a professional league, as it only emboldens their bad behavior, both on and off the court. Incidents like this reflect poorly on the PBA’s image and the team he represents.

While the shooting incident happened outside the PBA, I believe it’s time the league takes a hard stance and removes him. His behavior sets a bad example for young fans and aspiring basketball players. If he’s not dealt with appropriately, he might never learn his lesson, and worse things could happen in the future.

I don’t want to come off as judgmental, but with his history of violence, this situation seems like a continuation of a bigger issue. Basketball players hold a significant place in the public eye, especially for children who look up to them as role models. If a professional player behaves like this, how can we expect him to be a good influence?

I can’t help but feel nostalgic for the PBA legends of the past—Allan Caidic, Samboy Lim, Alvin Patrimonio—who were revered not just for their skills but for their sportsmanship and character. In today’s basketball world, things seem different.

May this incident serve as a wake-up call for both the player and the league. It’s crucial to remember that fame and athletic ability come with a responsibility to lead by example.
