When Religion Pushes People Away Instead of Drawing Them Closer

Have you ever been corrected by someone who sounded absolutely certain they already had a “direct ticket to heaven”, while making you feel condemned?

Recently, conversations online have reignited around strong and literal interpretations of Scripture, including remarks associated with Alvin Aragon. From judging LGBTQIA+ individuals to criticizing how former colleagues dress, the tone of these discussions has left many people uncomfortable.

Let’s be clear: everyone has the right to their beliefs.

But there is a huge difference between being faithful and being self-righteous.

And that difference matters.

When “The Word” Becomes a Weapon

Religion was never meant to be used as a microphone for superiority.

Yet sometimes, Scripture is quoted not to heal, but to highlight who is “right” and who is “wrong.” Instead of drawing people closer to God, it pushes them further away.

Ironically, the very Jesus many Christians proclaim is the same Jesus who ate with sinners, defended the marginalized, and corrected the proud religious leaders of His time.

Faith rooted in love attracts. Faith rooted in pride repels.

If our interpretation of the Bible produces more anger than compassion, more division than peace, maybe it’s time to revisit the core message.

Because the Gospel, at its heart, is about grace.

Faithful vs. Judgmental: What’s the Difference?

Here’s where discernment is needed.

1. Faithful People Lead with Humility

They understand they are saved by grace, not by personal perfection. Their lives reflect quiet obedience, not loud condemnation.

2. Self-Righteous People Lead with Superiority

They measure others publicly while elevating themselves privately. Their tone often feels condescending, even when quoting Scripture.

3. Faithful People Correct with Compassion

Truth can be firm without being cruel.

4. Self-Righteous People Correct with Contempt

If correction humiliates instead of restores, something is off.

The Bible is a guide, not a hammer.

Blind literalism without context, history, or empathy can distort its purpose. Scripture should shape our character before it shapes our arguments.

As a Roman Catholic, I believe God is just, but also merciful. He is holy, but also patient.

In my own journey, I have seen prayers answered not through public boasting, but through quiet surrender. I have experienced God’s timing without needing to prove my righteousness to anyone else.

Faith, for me, is not about announcing how holy I am.

It is about living in a way that reflects kindness, respect, and humility, even toward those who disagree with me.

I do not need to shout to show I believe. And I certainly do not need to belittle others to validate my salvation.

The Real Question We Should Ask Ourselves

Are we bringing people closer to God, or are we making them feel unworthy of even trying?

Because the way we deliver our beliefs matters.

We can stand firm in conviction without standing on other people. We can uphold doctrine without crushing dignity.

We can speak truth, and still choose gentleness.

In a world already full of division, perhaps what people need most is not louder religion…

But deeper compassion.

Our relationship with God is personal. But our behavior is public.

And sometimes, the loudest sermons are not spoken from pulpits, they are demonstrated through humility.

Before we quote Scripture to correct someone, maybe we should ask: Is this coming from love, or from pride?

What do you think?

Have you ever experienced the difference between faithful conviction and self-righteous behavior?
