It was a typical Sunday in July 2025. My husband and I were on our way to the market, navigating the usual weekend bustle, when we saw a small black shape on the side of the road. At first glance, my husband thought she was already gone, just another victim of the busy streets. But as our scooter drew closer, a miracle happened: she lifted her head.

In that split second, we knew she was fighting. My husband immediately turned the scooter around. We couldn’t leave her there.

When we picked her up, our hearts broke. She was tiny, the vet later estimated she was only 4 to 6 weeks old. She was covered in fleas, suffering from a severe eye infection, and appeared to have been hit by a car. She was terrified, weak, and barely clinging to life.

The following day began our journey of healing. It wasn’t easy. There were rounds of antibiotics, eye ointments, and many nights spent wondering if she would pull through. I had grown up taking care of my aunt’s dogs, but I never imagined I would become a “cat mom.”

Growing up in the Philippines, many of us are raised with the superstition that black cats bring bad luck. I’ll admit, I used to believe it too. But Gucci changed everything. Looking into her bright, healed eyes, I realized that the only “bad luck” in her story was the moment she was abandoned on the street. Since she entered our lives, she has brought nothing but joy, laughter, and a deeper understanding of compassion.

Now, my husband and I can’t imagine life without her. Even when we travel, we find ourselves missing her constant presence. She isn’t just a rescue; she is family.

As part of our commitment to Gucci, we made sure she was more than just “saved”, we made sure she was protected.

  • Spaying (Kapon): We had Gucci spayed. Not only does this prevent unwanted litters, but it also protects her from serious uterine infections and mammary cancers. It has made her calmer and happier.
  • Microchipping: Gucci is now chipped and has her own passport! In Europe, and especially for travelers, a microchip is a permanent ID. If she ever gets lost, any vet, police, and the like, can scan her and find us immediately. It’s the ultimate peace of mind for any fur parent.

If you see a life in need, don’t look away. That “bad luck” black cat might just be the best thing that ever happens to you.
