A Tradition of Hope and Fresh Starts

As the clock strikes midnight every December 31st, a sense of renewal fills the air. The start of a new year feels like a blank slate—a chance to reflect, reset, and dream big. For many, this moment is marked by creating New Year’s resolutions, a tradition that goes back thousands of years. But how did it all begin? And what does it mean to Filipinos today?
The history of New Year’s resolutions is fascinating. Over 4,000 years ago, the ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of the year, hoping to secure their favor for the months ahead. Later, the Romans continued the practice, dedicating their resolutions to Janus, the two-faced god of beginnings and transitions. This tradition has since evolved, but the heart of it—commitment to change and self-improvement—remains the same.

The word “resolution” itself embodies determination—a firm decision to make a change or achieve something meaningful. Tying it to the New Year reflects the human desire for fresh starts, making it a symbolic moment to set personal goals.
In the Philippines, New Year’s resolutions align beautifully with the optimism that Filipinos bring into the season. Traditions like pagpapaputok (fireworks) and media noche (New Year’s Eve feast) represent letting go of negativity and welcoming good fortune. It’s not uncommon to see friends and family sharing their resolutions online, often accompanied by hashtags or inspiring posts.

However, the reality is that many resolutions are easier made than kept. Research shows that about 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February, with only 9% of people successfully achieving them. Common reasons for this include setting unrealistic goals, losing motivation, or failing to plan effectively.
Globally, the most popular resolutions include exercising more, eating healthier, saving money, focusing on mental health, and learning new skills. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, resolutions often reflect close-knit family values and personal aspirations: spending more time with loved ones, saving for travel or emergencies, getting organized, starting a business, and strengthening spiritual growth.

So why do so many resolutions fail? Often, it’s because they lack structure or realistic timelines. The solution lies in setting SMART goals—ones that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Breaking big goals into smaller, manageable milestones and tracking progress can make a significant difference. Sharing your resolutions with a trusted friend can also provide accountability and encouragement.
As for me, I’ve never been one to make New Year’s resolutions. It’s not that I don’t believe in them; I simply prefer to focus on long-term life plans and personal goals. For me, resolutions are meaningful only if they align with a clear purpose and intention. My path has always been guided by prayer and a determination to see my plans through, regardless of the time of year.
New Year’s resolutions are more than just promises; they’re a testament to the human spirit’s desire for growth and hope. Whether or not you make one, what truly matters is the effort and determination you bring to your goals every day.
New Year’s resolutions are not about perfection but progress. Embrace the journey and celebrate every small step forward.
