On April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 due to complications from chronic lung issues and double pneumonia. His final public appearance was on Easter Sunday, where he addressed thousands in St. Peter’s Square.

The process to elect a new pope, known as the conclave, will commence 15-20 days after Pope Francis’s death. Approximately 120 cardinals under the age of 80 will gather in the Sistine Chapel to vote. A two-thirds majority is required to elect the new pontiff.
