Why Filipinos Might Feel Offended at First (But Eventually Laugh)

When you marry someone from another country, you don’t just marry the person, you also marry their culture, traditions, and sometimes… their sense of humor.
When I married my husband from the Netherlands, one of the things he introduced me to was Dutch humor.
At first, I didn’t understand it at all.
Sometimes he would make jokes that felt a little too direct or blunt. Coming from the Philippines, where humor is often playful, expressive, and sometimes dramatic, I initially found Dutch jokes confusing. There were moments when I even felt slightly offended because I couldn’t tell if he was serious or joking.
But over time, I realized something important.
Dutch humor is simply different, it is dry, straightforward, and often sarcastic. Once you understand the style, it becomes surprisingly funny.
What Makes Dutch Humor Different?
Dutch humor reflects the culture of the Netherlands itself: honest, direct, and not overly dramatic.
Here are some characteristics of Dutch comedy:
1. Very Direct
Dutch people are known for their straightforward communication. The jokes often sound blunt, but they are usually not meant to hurt anyone.
2. Dry and Sarcastic
Instead of loud punchlines, Dutch comedians often deliver jokes calmly, with subtle sarcasm.
3. Situational Humor
Many jokes revolve around everyday life, relationships, awkward social situations, or cultural habits.
4. Self-Deprecating
Dutch comedians are also good at making fun of themselves, which keeps the humor balanced.
For Filipinos who are used to expressive comedy, this style can feel surprising at first.
But once you get used to it, it becomes very entertaining.
My husband introduced me to a Dutch comedy show on Prime Video called LOL: Last One Laughing Netherlands.
The concept is simple but hilarious: comedians try to make each other laugh while trying not to laugh themselves.
Watching the show helped me understand Dutch humor much better. It also introduced me to some talented Dutch comedians.
Among the comedians I discovered, my favorites are the duo from Sluipschutters.
In particular, I really enjoy the performances of Bas Hoeflaak and Leo Alkemade.
Their sketches are incredibly creative and relatable. They often create funny scenarios that highlight everyday situations in a clever and unexpected way.
What I appreciate most about them is how natural their comedy feels. It’s not forced, it flows naturally from the situation.
Even if you’re not Dutch, you can still enjoy their humor once you understand the style.
Humor is deeply connected to culture.
Filipino comedy often involves storytelling, expressive reactions, and exaggerated situations. Meanwhile, Dutch humor tends to be subtle, clever, and sometimes unexpectedly blunt.
Neither is better than the other, they are simply different ways of making people laugh.
For me, learning to understand Dutch humor became part of learning my husband’s culture.
At first I didn’t always catch the joke.
Now, sometimes I laugh even before he finishes the punchline.
Comedy can be a beautiful way to connect cultures.
It helps us understand how people think, how they see everyday life, and what they find funny.
Through Dutch comedy, I discovered not only a new type of humor but also a deeper appreciation of cultural differences.
And sometimes, the jokes that once confused you can become the ones that make you laugh the most.
Have you ever experienced humor from another culture that surprised you at first?
If you’re curious about Dutch comedy, try watching LOL: Last One Laughing Netherlands or look up sketches from Sluipschutters.
You might discover a new kind of humor that will make you laugh in ways you never expected.
