Why Society Fears the Female “Cougar” But Applauds the Male “Sugar Daddy”

The internet is absolutely ablaze with fierce debates following PBA courtside reporter Apple David’s recent hard-launch of her relationship with 18-year-old NCAA basketball player Chad Gammad. With a 15-year age gap between them, David being 33 and Gammad having recently turned legal age, netizens have flooded social media with mixed reactions, heavily throwing around allegations of “grooming”.
Despite David firmly defending their relationship by pointing out that Gammad is a consenting legal adult and that they simply “clicked,” the court of public opinion remains heavily divided. People are aggressively debating frontal lobe development, life stages, and predatory behavior.
But beneath all the noise and the viral comment sections, this controversy shines a massive spotlight on a deep-rooted cultural hypocrisy. Why does an older woman dating a legal, younger man spark immediate moral outrage, while an older man doing the exact same thing gets a pass?
The Cultural Double Standard: Sugar Daddies vs. Cougars
When a wealthy, older man dates an 18-year-old woman in the Philippines, society barely bats an eye. He is casually labeled a “Sugar Daddy” or a successful benefactor, and the relationship is often met with a knowing wink or a joke about his financial status. But when a 33-year-old successful female professional dates an 18-year-old man, she is instantly vilified as a predator or a “cougar” taking advantage of an unformed mind.
This double standard exposes a deeply patriarchal view of agency. It suggests that a young woman at 18 is mature enough to choose an older partner, but an 18-year-old man is entirely helpless against the charms of an older woman. If both individuals are consenting adults under the law, why are the social consequences so radically different based on gender?
While critics point out that the human brain’s frontal lobe isn’t fully developed until age 25, we must look at how selectively we apply this logic. At 18, we allow citizens to vote, sign legal contracts, join the military, and drive cars. If they are old enough to make decisions that impact the future of a nation, are they truly incapable of choosing who they fall in love with?
A Lived Perspective: Navigating a 20-Year Age Gap
This conversation feels incredibly close to home for me. My husband and I navigate a 20-year age gap in our own marriage. However, there is a distinct situational difference: I am currently in my 40s. Entering an age-gap relationship in your 30s or 40s comes with an established foundation of emotional maturity, financial independence, and a solid sense of self that makes navigating generational differences much easier.
When you enter adulthood at 18, you are still actively figuring out who you are. Age-gap relationships at that specific turning point naturally draw more scrutiny because the life experience gap is at its widest. Yet, as someone who lives the reality of a massive age gap every single day, I know firsthand that real compatibility doesn’t depend on a birth certificate. True, lasting relationships are built on shared values, deep mutual respect, emotional maturity, and open communication. No outsider looking through a smartphone screen can measure that.
Red Flags vs. Autonomy: Where Do We Draw the Line?
There is a massive distinction between actual grooming, which involves a predatory pattern of manipulation targeting a minor over time, and two legal adults meeting and genuinely connecting. Apple David has made it clear that Gammad was already of legal age when they met, and that both of their families are fully supportive.
Ultimately, we have to ask ourselves: Is our collective societal outrage genuinely rooted in protecting young people, or are we simply uncomfortable with a successful woman exercising her own autonomy? Until we can judge age-gap relationships with the exact same lens regardless of gender, our moral policing will always remain completely hypocritical.
What are your thoughts on this viral issue? Do you think the massive backlash against Apple David is a justified concern regarding life stages, or is it a classic example of a societal double standard? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!
Maturity is not an automated gift given on your birthday; it is earned through life experience. Love between consenting adults should be measured by the depth of their respect, not the number of years between them. – Karen Kheaye
