My Bittersweet Birthday Reflections

A reflective 47th birthday blog post feature image blending elements of K-Pop concerts, travel destinations, family dreams, and animal foundation goals

They say that when you near 50, you’re supposed to have it all figured out. You’re supposed to be poised, deeply mature, and fully settled into the skin of a “proper” adult.

Well, I just turned 47. And if I am being completely honest? I still feel wonderfully, beautifully immature.

I don’t hide my age, I am proud of every single year. But turning 47 has brought a wave of raw reflections over me. I am married, I am growing, and yet I still feel like a kid with a massive bucket list, big dreams to chase, and a heart that is continuously learning how to navigate both immense gratitude and deep heartbreak.

you’ve ever felt like you’re growing older but your spirit is still fiercely youthful, or if you’re still a passionate fan-girl at heart, this one is for you.

An Answered Prayer: Marriage, Growth, and Chinese Buffets

Looking back at where I am today, I can’t help but recognize the quiet miracles. For years, I prayed every night and every time I went to church for a specific kind of love. I asked Papa Jesus for a man who would truly accept me and my family.

God didn’t just answer that prayer; He exceeded it.

My husband is my biggest blessing. He has no vices, he doesn’t drink or smoke, and his love is an active, supportive force in my life. He embraces my inner fan-girl without judgment! Because of his unwavering support, I earned my Master’s degree, and right now, I am studying to acquire yet another skill to improve myself.

We celebrated my birthday exactly how I wanted: eating at my absolute favorite Chinese buffet. He spoils me with daily gifts and a special advance present, but the greatest gift is simply the life we’ve built together.

The Forever Fan-Girl: My Ultimate Concert Bucket List

Speaking of being a fan-girl, that passion is keeping me young at 47! Part of my heart will always belong to the music that makes me happy, and my ultimate concert bucket list is massive:

  • The Super Junior Legacy: I have been right there in the crowd cheering since Super Show 7, and my absolute hope is to keep watching them live until they retire. But my ultimate dream? Attending a specialized FanMeet or a Fan Birthday Celebration for my ultimate Super Junior bias, Leeteuk, and if I am incredibly lucky, getting a selfie with him!
  • The K-Pop Icons: I am manifesting seeing Bigbang and BTS live in concert. I know BTS is scheduled to come to Manila in March 2027, but because the chosen venue is located so far outside of main Manila and I’m completely unfamiliar with that area, I’ve made the tough decision to sit that one out for my own peace of mind. Instead, I am hoping and praying that Bigbang will visit Manila and bring their legendary energy right to the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena!
  • The Western Pop Legends: My inner child is also holding out hope for the ultimate pop music experiences. I want to catch Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, the Pussycat Dolls, and if ’NSYNC ever decides to do an official comeback tour, you can bet I will be trying to get front-row tickets!

Dreams Beyond Myself: Honoring My Family

As I look toward the big 50, my birthday wishes aren’t really for myself anymore. They are for the people who shaped me.

Topmost on my bucket list is completing the renovation of my parents’ house. My ultimate dream is to hand them a comfortable, beautiful home and spoil them completely. I want them to experience everything they missed out on when they were young and sacrificing for me. My only prayer is that God grants them long, healthy lives so I can keep showing them how deeply they are cherished.

I feel that same profound gratitude for my aunts and uncles, especially my Aunt Josefina, who worked tirelessly to send me to school. I want to return that love ten-fold.

Turning Heartbreak into Purpose: In Honor of Kuya RB & Dior

This year hasn’t been entirely filled with celebrations. Losing my cousin, Kuya RB, early this year broke my heart. I am haunted by the “what-ifs” and the bonding plans we never got to fulfill. But I find a quiet peace knowing he is in heaven with my Nanay, Lolo, Dad Randy, and Aunt Beth. He is no longer in pain; he can see clearly again, and he is running free.

He isn’t alone up there, either. My sweet rescue cat, Dior, is with him.

Being a fur mom to Gucci, Armani, and Prada has taught me so much about love. Losing Dior to FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) after a shelter rushed his surgery without checking his health properly was a devastating lesson. The “if-onlys” fueled a fire in my heart.

My Vision for the Future: As soon as I finish my current studies and pass my exams, I am channeling my grief into action. By next year, I hope to officially lay the groundwork for a dedicated animal foundation in Dior’s honor. It will be a safe haven where stray cats and dogs receive proper medical checks, spaying, neutering, microchipping, and unconditional love.

Alongside the foundation, I am also manifest-mapping the relaunch of my marketing agency, K2Kontent Creative Solutions. 47 is not the time to stop; it’s the time to build.

The Wanderlust Checklist

And yes, the explorer in me still wants to play! My life’s travel bucket list is wide open, and I am determined to tick off these boxes:

  • The Ultimate Disney Goal: I’ve conquered Florida and China, now I need to visit every single Disneyland branch in the world.
  • Architectural Wonders: Seeing the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Vatican in Rome.
  • A Return to My Roots & Beyond: Visiting South Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. I also want to return to Qatar and Singapore, but this time as a traveler, not a worker.
  • The Sports Fan Experience: Catching a live NBA game and a live Ice Hockey match.
  • The Foodie Tour: Eating at In-N-Out again and tasting authentic, local delicacies in every single country I touch.

Loving from a Distance: The Empty Space

To be completely transparent, there is one heavy piece of baggage I am carrying into this new year of life. My brother and I no longer talk. He chose to cut ties and limit my access to my nephews, whom I now only see through photos from my mother.

I don’t know what grave mistake I made in his eyes to deserve this, and it hurts deeply, especially knowing how much this estrangement pains our parents. We are only two siblings. But I have realized that I cannot turn back time or force a resolution.

If this space is what he needs to feel happy and keep his family safe, I will respect it. I will stop trying to fix the unfixable. But my heart remains open. I love him, and I love my nephews, always. Sometimes, loving someone at 47 means learning to love them silently from afar.

Life at 47 isn’t a straight line. It’s a beautiful, messy collage of answered prayers, unfinished dreams, loud concert arenas, deep grief, and hopeful tomorrows. You are never too old to be a fan-girl, never too mature to love Disneyland, and never too broken to keep moving forward. – Karen Kheaye
